Export grants readiness checklist

Export funding in Australia is spread across federal agencies (Austrade / Export Finance Australia), state trade programs and specialist schemes. This page is an independent readiness checklist, not a government guide and not legal or tax advice. Always read the official guidelines for the program you apply to.

Before you apply

1. Confirm you are exporting (or about to). Most programs want evidence of international sales activity, a market plan, or a booked trade event - not just an idea.
2. ABN, GST and entity details. Have your ABN, company/sole-trader details and (where required) GST registration ready. Some programs require a minimum trading history.
3. Track eligible spend. Keep invoices for marketing, travel, trade-show booths, IP protection overseas, and market research. EMDG-style claims in particular need clean records.
4. Write a one-page market plan. Target country, product/service, competitors, pricing, and how the grant money moves the needle.
5. Check co-contribution and caps. Many export grants are matched funding or reimburse a percentage of eligible costs up to a cap.
6. Avoid double-dipping. You usually cannot claim the same expense under two government programs.
